What is a Priory?

The parish family of St. John's Basilica is blessed with a monastic community which makes its home here with us.  St. Gabriel Benedictine Priory, the community of monks follows the ancient Rule of St. Benedict.  The community is a dependent priory of Mount Michael Abbey in Elkhorn, Nebraska.

The monastic community follows the uniquely Benedictine charism of  "Ora el Labora," prayer and work, as they strive to follow Christ more closely in the communal life.  The monastic observance revolves around six hours of liturgical prayer, celebrated in the parish.  Each monk has a special duty which supports the communities livelihood and builds up God's kingdom in our city.

The monks also operate the Father Daniel Mulvihill Retreat and Guest House, as well as St. Benedict's mission.
