___________________________________________________________________________ Welcome to the Basilica of St. John's Choir web page. Music is an integral part of the Roman Catholic Mass. Our musical heritage is rich with much wonderful music. Our goal is to once again be able to sing this music, which at times comes from the early years and centuries of catholic music. Our hope is that you will enjoy and appreciate the vast music that the Catholic Church has within her history from the earliest recorded centuries to our times today. The music traditions at the Basilica of St. John are vast. The music that is incorporated into the Mass ranges from the simple Mass settings, to Gregorian Chant. The choir assists with the music at the 10:30 a.m. Mass on each Sunday starting with the first Sunday after Labor Day and concluding on Corpus Christi Sunday. One will hear a piece that was composed within the last 10 years, or a Polyphonic piece written back in the Middle Ages. The instrumental music is provided by the Basilica's Casavant pipe organ, which was installed in 1963. The organ contains 38 ranks of pipes and has 1,998 pipes, which are divided between three divisions: Swell, Great, and Pedal divisions and is used on all Sunday Morning Masses. A Brass ensemble is utilized on Solemnities throughout the year with Christmas Midnight and Easter Vigil being two main Masses in which the Brass is present. A string quartet is being formed to provide additional musical resources to the Mass. If you have any questions, please contact either Tim Carlson Director of Music or Scott Rieker Choirmaster at 515-244-3101 ext. #714.
